Movie screening, potluck discussion and skill-share:
The first of a monthly series presented by the Quinnetukhut Society, a local group promoting awareness of the living skills, culture and history of the indigenous nations of New England.
Capture and Captivity in Native North America: Join us for a viewing of the History Channel documentary 'Captives'. Based on first hand accounts, this is the story of 18th c. colonial european americans, taken captive by north eastern native americans and adopted into local native american societies. A discussion will follow the film, led by local student of 17-18th c. native culture John Santos, highlighting local examples of cultural abduction and adoption. We'll finish with a skill share with Felix Lufkin: learn to make cordage, or rope from fiber plants. We'll learn which local plants had fiber use, and make our own length from milkweed. Recommended for ages 10 and up.
From 2-5pm, Sat March 1st at the Owl & Raven Community Space below Chameleon's hair salon in the Maplewood Shops, off Conz st., Northampton. Suggested donation 5-10$, please bring a potluck item for the lunch discussion.
